Rhino Creature Mark
An Aesthetic Creature Design
Objective
The task given in class was to first choose an animal and represent that animal as a stylized graphic interpretation. Following that process the creature would be incorporated into a larger design using a phrase determined by the designer. The project emphasized a focus on a strong geometry and using the fundamental elements of design.
Research
Sketching
In order to make an accurate and stylized looking rhinoceros for this project, good research was essential. This involved finding various angles and poses of the rhino that met a good balance between being legible and iconic, as well as being dynamic and interesting.
Visual Development
Two poses seemed to meet the criteria of legibly portraying a rhino and illustrating an iconic stance. These poses were a walking profile view and a walking front view.
Ultimately, the front view was a stronger direction to refine as it read easily as a rhino, and it was dynamic with an angry, charged expression and posture. In order to make the front view as fleshed out as possible and legible, the posture of the rhino’s stance sways outward, showing every detail and necessary piece of context.
Final Creature
The final product came out similar to works from the sketching phase, emphasizing a strong directional light to show form and an enraged expression to give the creature mark character and emotion. Minor tweaks were made to the geometry, in order to align with consistent angles throughout the work. This resulted in making the creature mark look more unified and cohesive in its structure.
Objective II
In continuation of the assignment, a phrase needed to be incorporated with the creature to make one cohesive design. The final phrase, "The unrelentingly charging horned giant, the Rhino," works to portray the characteristics of the Rhinoceros, and show a glimpse its traits and personality.

Type Ideation
Final II
The final Creature Mark with the phrase makes use of a strong contrast using shape and type, adding to a composition built upon the golden ratio. This was used to create an aesthetically pleasing composition that makes for a well constructed design.
