Amber Poster Contest
Creative Coalition of Color 2nd Annual Design Competition — Winning Poster
Objective
In the Creative Coalition of Color's 2nd Annual Design Competition, contestants were given a choice of three briefings for a fictional movie, along with a description of the plot and photo assets, all to be used to make a movie poster. Contestants had three days to make a poster for the movie of their choosing.
Research
Assets
The chosen movie is titled Amber and is about an 1800s pioneer woman hunting down the pack of wolves who killed her family while crossing a snowy mountain range.
It was important to get a good selection of assets that fit the concept the best, the end result using three total, one given out by the CCC and two from online sources. Research led to the selection of the torch and the pickaxe, as they are accurate to what a pioneer woman may use in an action thriller with this unique setting. These would be composited together to form the composition for the final design.
Visual Development
This combination of imagery would serve as the focal point of the poster, after being redesigned in a stylized illustration. The addition of color from the flame served to add strong contrast and it established the color scheme of the poster, contributing to the "cold" feeling given by the snowy mountains from the theme.
Design Iterations
Final
The final product included a path leading out of the subject's feet to create the beginnings of a scenery, doubling as the snowy peak of a mountain. The ominous eyes surrounding the subject tie the work directly to the movies plot of hunting down the wolves, as well as provide a sense of tension and stakes. The title, billing and border serve to frame the work and give everything it's proper place on the poster.
The resulting poster incapsulates the themes and key aspects of the film, while working to evoke emotion and portray the main conflict in a unique and stylized manner.
