The Streng Lab
A Neuroscience Research Lab Logo
Objective
A neuroscience researcher, in the process of founding her own lab, commissioned a logo that could represent her and her work in a fun, yet professional way that reflected her personally. She had a desire to communicate some of the research she conducts through the logo, showing a representation of the cells to relate back to her and her studies.
Research
The early stages of research consisted of learning about both famous lab logos as an inspiration of style and learning about the neurological components that were involved in the clients research. She studies Purkinje cells which are root like in structure and serve to process and carry information in the brain. The concept behind the logo was to make a simplified icon variation of these cells carrying out their function.
Ideation
Beginning sketches and drafts of the logo took various forms that ended up being too generic or simply the wrong direction for the task and not quite simplified enough. The final early draft that would move forward towards refinement (right), struck a good balance of simple and fun with the mix of colors and rounded shapes, while still portraying the Purkinje cell in a legible manner, for those who know what to look for.
Variations
The refining process consisted of editing the colors, simplifying the line work, and adding a variation with the lab's name. After several variations in width and text, the desired look was one with more slim line widths to show consistency throughout the logo and the color scheme reflected her own personal style and flare that makes the final look feel much more aligned with her than any random scientist.
It was also important to create a black and white variation for any uses she may have with the logo.
Final
The final Streng Lab logo is one that reflects my client and her research in a way that highlights the focal point of her studies, as well showing her personality and character in a simple and professional way.
