Elusive Echoes
A Poetic Poster Series
Objective
The briefing for this project was to make a poster series for one event that promoted the three different speakers that would be presenting. The key to making these posters a successful series was to make them all unique and strong on their own, while being cohesive with one another when grouped.
Research
Early research on the three poets led to finding that they all break boundaries and explore the limitations of the art forms in which they create, that being poetry and music. This became influential in ideation, as it was the basis for all of the sketches: how do these artists use their voice in unique ways to shake up the creative space?
Sketching
Getting lots of hand sketched ideation was very important, because it let helped sort through all of the ideas, finding those that were strongest, to pursue further in the design process. With a wide array of ideas, it was easier to weed out what was working and what was not.
Type Manipulation Study
From sketching came experimentation through manipulating the text physically. To influence creativity, printed out text was a good way to get unique effects that would otherwise be hard to achieve through only digital means. This process consisted of bending, warping, reflecting and cutting up type to get new forms that could be used in the series.
Digital Ideation
Refinement
The above effect felt the most promising and would continue through the process to be used in a composition that would be consistent through all three posters. The look was achieved through reflecting the text with various shiny household items, playing into the title: "Elusive Echoes".
By using miscellaneous objects found around the home, it relates back to the poets, who make art that is very modest and vulnerable, on a personal level. The objects serve to feel relatable to the audience.
Color Experimentation
Final
In the final stages of this project, type and color was added across the three variations of the original concept, each crafted for a different speaker. When approaching colors, as part of keeping them consistent with one another, it was crucial to keep them all complementary of one another, using deep, faded colors that feel connected.
When it came to adding type, consistency remained relevant. The column system introduced, allowed for them all to keep a similar placement from poster to poster, so viewers wouldn't get lost when searching for information.
The final series works to convey the theme of the event and tie each of these unique speakers together through posters that build off each other to work as one cohesive project.
