RODRIGUEZ RATTLERS
Joey Rodriguez Junior High School Branding
OBJECTIVE
With the construction of a new junior high in Arlington TX, the school needed a new brand identity to rally behind and represent them in all academic and athletic endeavors, while paying tribute to the influential Joey Rodriguez, the old schools soccer coach who had passed away from COVID-19, and who would be the namesake of the new Rodriguez Junior High.
RESEARCH
As the namesake of the school, it was crucial to portray an aspect of Joey Rodriguez in the schools new brand identity. With the 'Rattler' already selected by the school as the mascot, it was the presentation of the Rattler that would embody Joey Rodriguez. Drawing inspiration from iconic soccer club logos, a shield badge lock up made for a elegant and subtle homage to the late soccer coach in the new logo design concepts.
SKETCHING
Through sketching, a visual personality was developed, taking in to consideration what different expressions and details communicate about the Rattler and the brand as a whole; some snakes leaning more cute and friendly, with others showing aggression and poise. Ultimately, with respects for Joey Rodriguez in mind, the soccer badge style approach felt best suited for the what the school represented, and a more determined and less cartoonish snake integrated best into this style.
DESIGN ITERATIONS
As the design developed, an opportunity arose for an alternate logo that could represent different aspects of the school in a more academicĀ and less sporting way. This led to multiple logo variations that would be refined and stylized similar to one another, resulting in the logos seen below.
FINAL
The final logo designs work to form a cohesive brand that marries the school's desired visuals with its important background. With multiple logos that not only work on their own, but also function within the Rodriguez Junior High brand to present a consistent identity across all facets the school has to offer.
